What XLife Actually Means
XLife is a brand name, not a different chemistry. iRobot used it to market the Li-ion packs that shipped with later 800 series units and all 900 series units. They claimed "up to 2x the cycle life" compared to standard NiMH.
In practice, XLife packs deliver about 400 to 600 cycles — roughly 3 to 4 years of daily use. That's solid performance. But whether it's "2x" depends on what you compare it to. The original 1800mAh NiMH packs that shipped with early 600 series units often degraded noticeably by 250 cycles. A good 3300mAh aftermarket NiMH pack today lasts 300 to 400 cycles. Against that baseline, Li-ion gives you about 1.5x the lifespan — still better, but not double.
I think the XLife branding was more about signaling "this is the new thing" than about making a precise engineering claim. The Li-ion chemistry genuinely outlasts NiMH. That part is real. The "2x" number depends on which NiMH battery you put on the other side of the equation.
The real benefit of XLife — and Li-ion generally — isn't just the cycle count. It's that you don't have to run the battery empty every few weeks to prevent voltage depression. Li-ion doesn't develop that problem. You dock it. You forget about it. For me, that convenience is worth more than the extra cycles.
Cross-Compatibility Across Four Generations
