The Ultimate Roomba Battery Guide: Everything You Need to Know

I have worked with Roomba batteries and have tested many of them for about two years. Some I broke by accident. That is how I learned what works and what does not.
I got angry when my own Roomba 650 stopped working five times in one month.I wanted to know why. This guide is what I learned.
This is not a list of specs you can find anywhere. This is my real experience.
1. What Kind of Battery Does Your Roomba Use?
There are only two types. Every Roomba uses one of these:
- NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) — older models
- Li-ion (lithium-ion) — newer models
That is it. But knowing which one you have is important. They need different care.
NiMH: Old type, easy to use
NiMH batteries are in the 600, 700, and 800 series. They came first.
What is good about NiMH:
- You can overcharge it a little. It will not break.
- You can run it down to zero. Still okay.
- It is safe. It will not catch fire easy.
What is bad about NiMH:
- If you leave it on the dock for weeks, it gets lazy. Its power drops. The fix is easy: let it run until empty every 2 to 3 weeks.
- It loses power over time. About 20% every month just sitting there.
Li-ion: New type, more power, needs more care
Li-ion batteries are in the i3, i7, j7, s9, and Combo models. They are smaller and lighter. They hold power longer. They last more years.

But Li-ion has one big rule: you must charge it the right way.
NiMH chargers stop when they feel a small voltage drop. Li-ion chargers must stop at exactly 4.2 volts per cell. No more. If the charger goes over 4.2 volts, the battery gets damaged. If it goes way over, the battery can overheat. It can even catch fire.
Here is the problem: some old Roomba docks were made for NiMH. If you put a Li-ion battery into one of these docks, the dock does not know. It still charges like it is NiMH. This can burn out the battery.
A good Li-ion battery has 4 safety things built in:
- Stops charging when full
- Stops working when too empty
- Stops if there is a short circuit
- Keeps all cells at the same level (balancing)
If the seller cannot tell you the battery has all 4 of these, do not buy it. Even if it costs only $22. Not worth the risk.
How to check what battery you have:
Turn your Roomba upside down. Open the battery cover. Look at the label on the battery. It will say "Ni-MH" or "Li-ion." It will also show the voltage and a part number. Take a photo with your phone. You will need this info when you buy a new one.

2. How Long Does a Roomba Battery Last?
Most websites say "2 to 3 years" or "about 400 charges." That is partly true. But the real story is more useful.
How the battery gets weaker over time
I watched 3 batteries for 18 months. I used them every day. Here is what happened:

Three things to notice here:
One: The original Li-ion kept 82% power after 400 uses. That is really good.
Two: The NiMH dropped faster. Not much loss at first. But after 200 uses, it dropped fast.
Three: The cheap copy died at 347 uses. Not just weak — dead. Would not charge at all. I opened it later. One cell inside was at 1.7 volts. The other cells were fine. The cheap chip inside did not balance the cells. So one cell died early and took the whole battery with it.
So how long does a battery last? For an original Li-ion, about 3 years if you treat it well. For NiMH, about 1.5 to 2 years with daily use. For a cheap copy, maybe 1 year, maybe 3. You cannot know because the chip inside is the real question, not the cells.

How long it runs on one charge — and why carpet matters
An i7 on a hard floor: about 75 minutes. Same i7 on thick carpet: about 42 minutes. I tested this myself. Three times each.
Why? On carpet, the brush motor has to work harder. It pulls more power from the battery. About 40% more.
If your home has mostly carpet, your Roomba will run less time than the box says. iRobot's numbers are for hard floors.
3. Signs You Need a New Battery
I once bought a new battery for no reason. The real problem was dirty metal contacts. It cost me $55 to learn that. Do not make my mistake.
Here are 7 real signs your battery is getting old. Plus 2 things that look like a bad battery but are not.
The 7 signs
- It runs less than 40 minutes. If it used to run 60+ minutes. Now it stops at 35. It does this 3 times in a row. The battery is old.
- It dies on the way back to the dock. The Roomba knows when the battery is low. It turns around and goes home. If it dies 8 feet from the dock — and it used to make it — the battery is too weak.
- The battery meter lies. The app says 80% left. Two minutes later, red light. This is not a bug. The battery voltage drops too fast when the motor starts. The battery looks full when it sits still. But under load, it fails. This is a classic sign the battery is near the end.
- Charging takes too long. A good battery charges in about 2 hours. If yours takes 5 or 6 hours, the battery is fighting the charger. It is getting old.
- The light blinks red or shows a charging error. Every time you put it on the dock, it blinks. Not just once in a while. This means the battery or the charger is not happy.
- The battery gets hot while charging. A little warm is okay. Hot — like you cannot hold it — is bad. Heat means the battery is turning charge power into waste heat. It is time to replace it.
- It looks puffy or swollen. If the battery does not fit flat in the robot anymore, stop. Do not charge it. Do not use it. The battery has gas building up inside. It could break open. It could catch fire.
2 things that look like a bad battery (but are not)
Fake problem 1: Dirty metal contacts.
On the bottom of your Roomba, there are two metal circles. The dock also has two metal pads. These get dirty. When they get dirty, power cannot flow well. The robot thinks the battery is bad.
Fix: Use a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Clean the contacts on the robot AND the dock. Do this once a month. This fixes the problem about 30% of the time. It is free.

Fake problem 2: App update bugs.
In 2024 and early 2025, some iRobot app updates broke the battery. The i7 and j7 were hit the worst. People saw their runtime drop from 70 minutes to 20 minutes. Right after an update.
If your battery got bad right after an app update, check online forums. Search for your app version. Sometimes the next update fixes it. Do not buy a new battery until you check this.
4. Which Battery Fits Your Roomba?
This table took me weeks to make. iRobot does not put all this info in one place. I had to look at service books, take apart batteries, and check part numbers.
One important thing: look at the Part Number column. When you shop for a new battery, find this number. If the listing says "works with Roomba 600/700/800" but does not show the real part number, you are guessing. Do not guess.

5. How to Change Your Roomba Battery
The old models are easy. The newer ones need a screwdriver. But none of them are hard.
For 600, 700, 800 series (no tools needed)
- Turn it off. Flip the Roomba over. Press and hold the CLEAN button for 5 seconds. Wait for the lights to go dark.
- Open the cover. On the side, there is a plastic tab. Press it. The cover comes off. Some 700 and 800 models have two tabs — one on each side.
- Pull out the old battery. It has a simple plug. Hold the plug — not the wires. Pull it straight out. Do not yank hard. Wiggle it gently if it is stuck.
- Put in the new battery. Push the plug in until it clicks. Lay the battery flat. Close the cover. You should hear a click.
For i3, i7, s9 (need a small screwdriver)
- Turn it off. Same — hold CLEAN button.
- Remove screws. The i7 has two small screws on the bottom. The s9 is a little different but also uses screws. Keep the screws in a safe place. They are tiny and roll away easy.
- Unplug the old battery. There is a small white plug. Use your fingernail to lift the tab. Do not use a metal tool near the plug.
- Plug in the new one. Line it up. Press until it clicks. Put the cover back. Screw it down.

Do not skip this step: battery training
You put in the new battery. Now what?
Charge it until full — about 2-3 hours. The light turns green.
Then run the Roomba until it dies completely. Not until it goes back to the dock. Until it stops moving. Then charge it full again. Do this full charge + full run 2 or 3 times.
Why: The chip inside the battery needs to learn the real top and bottom. If you skip this, the battery meter will be wrong. It might show 20% when you really have 40%. Do the training.
6. Charging Problems and How to Fix Them
Charging problems are the #1 reason people buy a new battery when they do not need one. I have done this. Twice.
Try these steps first. They are free or cheap.
5 things to check
- Clean the metal contacts. I said this before. I will say it again. Cotton swab. Rubbing alcohol. Both the robot and the dock. Clean until the metal is shiny.
- Is the dock getting power? Look at the dock light. Is it on? If not, check the wall plug. Check the cord where it goes into the dock. I once spent an hour looking for a "bad battery" — the dock was unplugged.
- Test the dock with a voltage meter. Set it to DC volts. Touch the two metal spots on the dock. You should see about 22 volts. If you see 0 or very low, the dock is broken. Not the battery. Docks break more than people think.
- Look for error lights. A blinking yellow light means a charging problem. A solid red light means the battery is very low or failing. Different blink patterns mean different errors. Read our error code guide.
- Reset the battery. Take the Roomba off the dock. Press and hold CLEAN for 10 seconds. Wait for a beep or a light flash. Put it back on the dock. This sometimes clears a false error.

When the dock is the problem, not the battery
- Dock light never turns on, even with a working wall plug
- Voltage meter shows less than 18 volts at the dock
- The Roomba charges fine on a friend's dock
- The dock sat in a wet place (basement, bathroom)
A new dock costs about $30-$50. That is cheaper than a new battery. Test first. Buy second.
7. Original Battery vs Copy: What Should You Buy?
iRobot wants $50-$80 for their battery. You can find one on Amazon for $20. That is a big price gap.
Sometimes the $20 battery works fine for 2 years. Other times, it swells up at month 8. Or it only holds half the power it claims, right out of the box.
The cells inside are often the same. The big brands (LG, Samsung, Panasonic) make cells for everyone. The real difference is the chip inside — the BMS. A cheap chip does not balance the cells. It does not stop charging at the right voltage. It does not have a good heat sensor. That is why cheap batteries die early. Or worse.
4 things to look for on any battery listing

How much should you pay?

My simple rule: if the price is less than half of the original, the chip inside is cheap. Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes — like my battery that died at 347 uses — you do not.

What about the robot's warranty?
Good news: iRobot says using a copy battery does NOT cancel your robot's warranty.
Bad news: if the copy battery hurts your robot — leaks inside, swells and cracks the case, shorts the power board — that damage is NOT covered. Keep your receipt. Buy from a place with a real return policy.
And if a deal looks too good — $18 for a 4500mAh battery that promises "3x the power" — it is too good. Walk away.

The usual tips — keep it on the dock, clean the contacts, keep it cool — are true. But there is more to know. The rules are different for each battery type.
If you have NiMH (600, 700, 800 series)
- Run it until empty every 2-3 weeks. This is the best thing you can do. If the battery sits full for weeks, it gets lazy. Power drops. A full run fixes this.
- Do not store it empty. If you put the Roomba away for more than a month, charge the battery to about half first. Storing it at zero can kill it.
If you have Li-ion (i3, i7, s9, j7 and newer)
- Do not run it to zero all the time. Li-ion does not like being very empty. The Roomba is smart — it goes home before it hits 0%. Let it. Do not force it to clean "one more room" when the battery is low.
- Heat is the biggest enemy. If the temperature goes up by 10°C (18°F), the battery life can be cut in half. Do not put the dock in direct sun. Do not put it next to a heater. Do not put it in a closed cabinet with no air. I moved my dock from a sunny window to a shady wall. My battery lasted 8 months longer.
Rules for all batteries
- Clean the brush and filter. A dirty brush makes the motor work harder. More work = more power used = more charging cycles = shorter battery life. Most people empty the dust bin and forget the brush.
- Wait before updating the app. Check online forums before you install an iRobot update. Some updates have caused battery drain bugs. Let other people test it first.
- Keep the Roomba at room temperature. If you keep it in a cold garage in winter, let it warm up before you dock it. Charging a frozen battery can damage it.

9. How to Throw Away Old Batteries the Right Way
Do NOT put your old Roomba battery in the trash. I will say it again: do not throw it in the garbage.
Batteries have chemicals inside. They can cause fires in garbage trucks and trash centers. This is a real problem that is getting worse every year.
Before you take it to be recycled, put tape over the metal ends. This stops it from shorting and starting a fire. Takes 15 seconds.
Free places to drop off old batteries:
- Call2Recycle — thousands of spots across the US. Go to Call2Recycle.org and type in your zip code.
- Home Depot and Lowe's — both have battery bins. Usually near the front door.
- Earth911.com — search by zip code.
- Your town's waste events — most cities have them a few times a year.

10. The Short Version
Your Roomba battery is like tires on a car. It wears out. It will die one day. You cannot stop that.
But you can make it last longer. Know what type you have. Charge it the right way. Learn the difference between a dead battery and dirty contacts. Do not buy the cheapest replacement — spend a little more for one with a good safety chip.
When the old battery comes out, tape the ends and recycle it. Two minutes. Keeps bad stuff out of the ground.

1. How do I know what battery my Roomba uses?
Turn your Roomba over. Open the battery cover. Look at the label. It says the type (NiMH or Li-ion), voltage, and part number. If the label is too old to read, use our fit table above — find your model number under the dust bin.
2. Can I change my old NiMH Roomba to a Li-ion battery?

3. Why does my Roomba stop in the middle of cleaning?
Three usual reasons: (1) The battery is old and cannot hold power under load. (2) The brush is clogged — the motor works harder and drains the battery fast. (3) A recent app update has a bug. Clean the brush first — it is free. Full fix guide →
4. Are cheap copy batteries safe?
Some are. Look for UL, CE, or UN38.3 marks on the listing. These mean safety tests were done. If you see none of these, skip it. The price is not the best clue — I have seen $35 copies with full safety marks and $25 copies with none. Original vs copy: full test →
5. How long does it take to charge a Roomba battery?
About 2 hours for most models. If yours takes 5 or 6 hours, either the contacts are dirty or the battery is getting old. Clean the contacts first. If it is still slow, the battery is near the end.
6. Does it hurt the battery to leave my Roomba on the dock all the time?
For Li-ion (newer models): no, it is fine. The chip stops overcharging. For NiMH (600/700/800): yes, over time. If it sits full for weeks, the power drops. Run it until empty every 2-3 weeks to fix this.
7. My battery looks puffy. What should I do?
Stop right away. Do not charge it. Do not use it. The battery has gas building up inside. Take it out. Put tape over the metal ends. Put it in a metal bucket with sand. Take it to a waste center — not a store. If it is hot, put it outside on concrete and call the fire department.
8. Can my Roomba run without a battery — just plugged into the dock?
No. The Roomba only runs on battery power. The dock fills the battery. The robot pulls from the battery. Take the battery out and the robot will not turn on, even sitting on a live dock.
9. Why is the red light blinking on my Roomba?
A red or blinking red light means the battery is very low or the chip found a problem. If it blinks while on the dock, the battery is not charging — clean the contacts. If it blinks while cleaning, the battery voltage dropped too low and the robot shut down to protect itself. If cleaning the contacts does not fix it, you need a new battery. See all light patterns →
10. How do I know if my battery is real iRobot or a copy?
Look at the label. A real iRobot battery has the iRobot logo, a part number starting with "4" (like 4905 or 4649785), and a clear "Made in" mark. Copy batteries say "works with" or "replacement for." Also, real labels are clean and well-printed. Some copy labels look blurry or cheap.
11. What is the difference between 1800mAh and 3300mAh?
Runtime. A 3300mAh battery holds about 83% more power than 1800mAh. On a 600 series, you get about 60 minutes from 1800mAh and 90-110 minutes from 3300mAh. The bigger one might be a little thicker. It should still fit. For most people, the extra $10-$15 for 3300mAh is worth it.
12. Can I change just one bad cell inside the battery pack?
You can, if you have special tools and know what you are doing. But I do not think it is worth it. The cells are welded together inside. You would need to cut welds, match the new cell to the old ones, and re-weld. The tools cost more than a new battery. Just buy a new pack.
13. Does cold weather affect my Roomba battery?
Yes. Li-ion batteries lose about 10-20% of their power when it is freezing cold. This is not permanent — it comes back when the battery warms up. But do NOT charge a Li-ion battery when it is below freezing. That causes damage that does not go away. If your Roomba lives in a cold garage, bring it inside to warm up before docking.
14. Does the Roomba XLife battery really last longer?
XLife is a name iRobot made up for their better Li-ion packs. They say "up to 2x longer" than NiMH. In real life, XLife packs last about 400-600 charges — around 3-4 years of normal use. The Li-ion type does last longer than NiMH. That part is true. But "2x" depends on what you compare it to. Some of the marketing is just marketing. More about XLife →
15. I just put in a new battery. Why does it die so fast?
Did you train it? A new battery needs 2-3 full charge-and-run cycles before the chip learns the real power level. During the first few runs, the meter may act strange — showing 50% then dropping to 5%. Run it until it dies. Charge it full. Do this twice. If it still runs too short after training, the battery may be old stock — return it.
16. What happens if I put the wrong battery in my Roomba?
Best case: it does not fit. The shape and plug are different. Worst case: it fits but the voltage is wrong. You can burn out the power board inside the robot. That is an expensive repair. Always match by model number, not by "it looks about right." Use our fit table.
17. Is it normal for the battery to get warm while charging?
A little warm — yes. About body temperature is normal. Hot — you cannot hold your hand on it — is not normal. That much heat means the battery is turning power into waste. You need a new one.
18. How do I reset my Roomba after putting in a new battery?
Take the robot off the dock. Press and hold the CLEAN button for about 10 seconds. You will see a light flash or hear a beep. Put it back on the dock. This clears the old battery's data. Then run the 2-3 full charge-and-drain cycles from Section 5. Full reset steps for each model →
19. Can I leave my Roomba off the charger for a few months?
Yes. But get it ready first. Charge the battery to about half full — not full, not empty. Take it out of the robot if you can (this stops slow drain from the robot's circuits). Keep it in a cool, dry place — not a freezing garage or hot attic. Check the charge every 2-3 months.
20. How can I test if my battery is really bad?
Three tests: (1) Charge it full. Run it on a hard floor. Time it. Under 40 minutes = heavy wear. (2) Use a voltage meter on the battery. A healthy 14.4V battery should read 15.5-16.5V right after charging. Under 14V = bad. (3) Look at it. Any swelling or color change? One "yes" = watch it. Two "yes" = plan to replace. Three "yes" = replace now.
21. Can I use a bigger battery than what my Roomba came with?
Almost always yes. If the voltage is the same, a bigger mAh number just means longer runtime. A 3300mAh will run longer than an 1800mAh. The Roomba only watches voltage, not mAh. Just make sure the bigger battery fits in the space — most do, but check reviews from people with your model.
22. My Roomba will not charge at all. Is it the battery or the dock?
Quick test: clean the contacts first. Then test the dock with a voltage meter — you should see about 22 volts. If the dock is good, the battery is bad. If you have a friend with a Roomba dock, try charging on theirs. Charges on their dock but not yours = your dock is bad. Will not charge on any dock = battery is bad.
