Why the Price Floor Exists

A lithium battery requires a BMS with four protection functions. The components for all four — voltage reference IC, balancing circuit, MOSFETs for cutoff switching, and a thermal sensor — cost approximately $3 to $5 at manufacturing scale. What happens instead: the BMS is reduced to one or two functions. The BMS lacked a balancing circuit. One cell failed early and took the whole pack with it. The component that would have prevented this costs approximately $0.80.

At the extreme end, some cheap batteries omit the thermal fuse entirely — a $0.04 component that prevents catastrophic overheating. One detailed teardown of a popular Amazon brand found no safety fuse at all. Without it, there is nothing to stop a lithium battery from entering thermal runaway if the charging circuit malfunctions.

Anything above that number is not a better battery — it's a better label printer.

How to Evaluate a Listing in 30 Seconds

Four criteria. Each takes a few seconds to check on a product page. Together they separate safe batteries from dangerous ones.

1. Certification marks. Look for UL 2054 or CE certification. These mean an independent laboratory tested the battery for overcharge, short-circuit, and mechanical stress conditions. If no certification is mentioned anywhere in the listing, no independent safety testing has occurred. You are relying entirely on the seller's word.

2. UN38.3 compliance. This is the transport safety standard required by law for shipping lithium batteries. It covers altitude simulation, thermal cycling, vibration, and impact testing. A battery cannot legally be shipped without passing UN38.3. If the listing doesn't mention it, the battery may not have been tested at all.

3. All four BMS functions named. Overcharge protection. Over-discharge protection. Short-circuit protection. Cell balancing. All four must appear explicitly in the product description. Generic phrases like "safety chip included" or "protection circuit" that don't enumerate specific functions mean the BMS is incomplete. The missing function is almost always cell balancing — the one that determines how many cycles you get.

4. Real capacity data. Not "up to 4500mAh." A real tested figure. If the listing shows a discharge curve graph or states a tested minimum capacity, the seller has measured their product. If it only says "up to" followed by a high number at a low price, the number is marketing.
