How to Reset — One Procedure, All Models

Every lithium battery pack contains a BMS that tracks voltage, current, and estimated remaining capacity. When you install a new battery, the BMS has no historical data for those specific cells. It must learn the voltage curve through complete charge-discharge cycles.
Until it learns, the battery meter will be inaccurate. Sometimes showing 40% when the actual charge is 80%. Sometimes showing 5% when you still have 20%. The battery works fine either way — it just can't report its state correctly.
- Charge fully. Place the Roomba on the dock. The indicator pulses amber while charging, then turns solid green when complete — typically about 2 hours for most packs.
- Run until it physically stops. Not until the app says the battery is low. Not until the robot decides to head home. Until the motors cut out and the lights go dark. The BMS needs to see the actual voltage floor — where the cells can no longer sustain motor operation. That point is well below the navigation system's "return to dock" threshold.
- Charge fully again. Back on the dock until solid green.
- Repeat. Two to three complete cycles give the BMS enough data to map the voltage curve accurately. Two cycles are usually sufficient. Three produce the best calibration.

The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
Letting the Roomba return to the dock on its own instead of running it until it physically stops.
The "return to dock" trigger fires when the battery reaches approximately 10-15% remaining — well above the true voltage floor. The BMS needs to see where the cells can no longer sustain motor operation. That happens lower. If you stop at "return to dock" every time, the BMS never learns where the bottom actually is. It calibrates against the wrong floor, and the meter stays inaccurate.
For NiMH batteries in the 600, 700, and 800 series, this advice runs in the opposite direction for routine maintenance. NiMH benefits from a periodic full discharge every 2-3 weeks to prevent voltage depression. But that's maintenance, not calibration.
