How to Replace a Roomba i7 or s9 Battery Step by Step

The Roomba i7 battery is user-replaceable — two screws, one connector, about 3 minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver. The s9 takes about 5 minutes with additional bottom panel screws. The j7, j9, and Combo models have sealed batteries that cannot be replaced by the owner — those require iRobot service at $99 to $149.

This is the second-easiest Roomba battery replacement after the 600 series. Unlike the 600 series latch-door design, the i7 and s9 use screw-down covers with a 4-pin locking connector. The procedure is straightforward, but the connector tab is easy to miss and the screws are easy to lose. This guide covers both models, the batteries you need, and the calibration step that follows every replacement.

Which Battery You Need

The i7 and s9 batteries are not interchangeable — the connectors and form factors differ. Every ABL pack includes a complete 5-function BMS with overcharge cutoff, over-discharge cutoff, short-circuit protection, thermal monitoring, and cell balancing. A 1-year warranty covers manufacturing defects.

i7 / i7+ / i8 Battery Replacement

You need a small Phillips screwdriver. That's the only tool.

1. Power off. Turn the i7 upside down. Press and hold CLEAN for 5 seconds until all indicator lights go dark.
2. Remove the two screws. The square battery cover on the bottom is secured by two small Phillips screws. Remove them and set them somewhere safe — they're tiny and roll away easily.
3. Lift the cover. Underneath, the battery sits in a compartment with a white 4-pin connector on one side.
4. Disconnect the old battery. The connector has a small plastic locking tab. Use your fingernail to lift the tab before pulling. Do not use a metal screwdriver near the connector terminals. Grip the plug housing — never pull on the wires.
5. Connect the new battery. Align the connector and press until the tab clicks into place. Lay the battery flat. Replace the cover. Insert and tighten the two screws until snug — don't overtighten into plastic threads.

s9 / s9+ Battery Replacement

The s9 procedure is similar but takes slightly longer due to the D-shaped chassis design. You'll remove a larger bottom panel with multiple screws instead of a small battery-only cover.

1. Power off. Flip the s9 over. Hold CLEAN for 5 seconds.
2. Remove the bottom panel screws. The s9 has multiple screws securing the bottom access panel. Note which screw goes where — they may be different lengths. Keep them organized.
3. Locate the battery. It sits near the center of the chassis, connected by a 4-pin plug similar to the i7.
4. Disconnect and replace. Lift the connector tab with a fingernail. Pull the plug — not the wires. Connect the new ABL-B battery until it clicks. Replace the panel and screws.

j7 / j9 / Combo — Why You Can't Do It Yourself

The j7, j9, and Combo j7/j9 represent a design change from iRobot. Where every previous Roomba generation — 600, 700, 800, 900, i3, i7, s9 — had user-accessible battery compartments, the j-series moved to a sealed chassis. The battery is installed during manufacturing and is not designed to be accessed by the owner.

There is no battery door. No latch. No screw-down cover. Reaching the battery requires disassembling the robot — a procedure that voids the warranty and risks damaging internal ribbon cables, sensors, and the sealed chassis gaskets.

When a j-series battery reaches end of life, the only supported path is iRobot's service program. The replacement cost is $99 to $149, which includes the new battery, labor, and return shipping. The process typically takes 7 to 14 days round-trip. Contact iRobot support through the app or website to initiate service.

Calibration After Install

Same procedure as every Roomba battery replacement. The BMS in the new pack needs to learn the voltage curve of the specific cells inside it.

1. Charge fully. Place on the dock until the indicator turns solid green — about 2 hours.
2. Run until it physically stops. Not until it returns to the dock. Until the motors cut out and the lights go dark.
3. Charge fully again. Back on the dock until solid green.
4. Repeat. Two to three complete cycles. Two is usually sufficient. Three produces the best calibration.
