Step-by-Step Replacement
The battery compartment is on the bottom of the robot. Flip it over on a clean, flat surface — a kitchen table works well. Good lighting helps. The latch tab is small and sits flush with the surrounding plastic. It's easy to miss on the first try.
Step 1: Power off the Roomba
Press and hold the CLEAN button for about 5 seconds. All indicator lights will go dark. Don't skip this — the robot's motors are strong enough to pinch your fingers if it wakes up while you're working inside the compartment.
Step 2: Open the battery door
Look at the bottom cover. Along one edge — typically the side opposite the brush assembly — there's a small rectangular tab, about the width of your thumbnail. It sits flush with the surrounding plastic. Press it firmly inward. The battery cover will release.
Some 700 and 800 series models use two tabs, one on each side of the cover. If pressing one side doesn't release the door, check the opposite edge. Press both simultaneously and the cover comes free.

Step 3: Remove the old battery
Inside the compartment, the battery connects through a white 2-pin plug. Grip the plastic connector housing — never pull on the wires — and pull straight out. The plug is a simple friction fit. It doesn't lock or clip. If it feels stiff, a gentle side-to-side wiggle will free it.
Lift the old battery out. If it was recently charging, it'll be warm to the touch. That's normal.
Step 4: Install the new battery
Line up the white connector with the socket inside the compartment. Push until you hear or feel a click — the plug is fully seated when the connector housing sits flush against the socket. Lay the battery flat. It only fits one way. The compartment shape prevents incorrect orientation.
Close the cover. Press along the edge until the latch clicks into place. If the cover resists closing, the battery isn't fully seated — open it, press the battery down flatter, and try again. Never force the cover closed against battery resistance. The plastic latch can snap, and replacing it means replacing the entire bottom cover.
Calibration After Install
Installing the battery is half the job. The other half is teaching the BMS where the voltage limits are.
- Charge fully. Place the Roomba on the dock. The indicator pulses amber while charging, then turns solid green — typically about 2 hours.
- Run until it physically stops. Not until the app says the battery is low. Not until the robot decides to head home. Until the motors cut out and the lights go dark. The BMS needs to see the actual voltage floor — where the cells can no longer sustain motor operation. That point is below the "return to dock" threshold.
- Charge fully again. Back on the dock until solid green.
- Repeat. Two to three complete cycles give the BMS enough data for accurate reporting. Two cycles are usually sufficient. Three produce the best calibration.
